DRIFT BOATING DOWN THE GOULBURN

Imagine a river of paradise. Birds singing, fish rising and utter silence as you float your way down the Goulburn River on a drift boat.

Cody and I headed down the road to Alexandra where Mandy (aka the Boss) had booked us on a drift boating trip with GV Fly Fishing.

We met Antony and our guide Geoff in Alexandra at 7am before heading off towards the river. Pulling up at the Goulburn River Cody and I put our rods together whilst the boys got the boat ready. All aboard, we drifted out into the current and tied a Cicada to our lines. A few casts for practise and we were off!

Cody hooked a nice fish about 10 mins into the trip weighing around 2.5lbs. I saw a large brown trout feeding on the surface and landed the dry fly straight on his head. The cicada was irresistible!

I started stripping this big fish in and he was putting up a fight, but unfortunately he was too smart for me, he powered straight under a log and in the end snapped me off.

We continued to fish our way down the river spotting some nice fish but finding it hard to land them in the boat. I struck at several fish, but didn’t hook them. The weather was perfect in the morning but as lunch time snuck up, so did the wind. It almost became impossible to cast and impossible for poor Geoff to paddle down stream as the head wind was so strong.

Later on Cody Hooked another fish coming in a little smaller than his first. We tried to fish further down stream but the weather conditions became worse.

Finishing up we had a great day with a lot of action on the water. Geoff was a great guide and the beautiful Goulburn River is one to fish. With a constant cool temperature it’s a great habitat for large trout to grow.

Ideally, drift boating is the way to go. With overgrown willows inhabiting the banks this river would be hard to walk and fish, leaving you little river access.

If you are interested in a trip don't hesitate to contact GV Fly fishing.
